The missing soldiers, all from the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, were operating an M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle, a heavy-duty military vehicle designed for battlefield recovery operations. According to U.S. Army officials, the vehicle was discovered underwater on Wednesday, but no sign of the soldiers has yet been found. The military has not released details on what may have caused the vehicle to become submerged, though speculation ranges from accidental mechanical failure to hazardous terrain conditions.

“You all know how important the presence of U.S. troops is in Lithuania. Their soldiers are like our soldiers to us. So we spare no effort to find them,” Vaiksnoras emphasized.
Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene visited the site late Wednesday, reiterating that no bodies had been recovered and that it would be premature to confirm any casualties. Despite earlier comments from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Warsaw suggesting the soldiers had died, a NATO spokesperson later clarified that Rutte was not officially confirming their fate.
